Austrian artist LIA, a trailblazer in software and net art for nearly 30 years, took a transformative five-month sabbatical in New Zealand to step back from the relentless pace of digital creation. The result of this pause was Sabbatical, a new generative artwork that reflects both a renewed creative spirit and a reaffirmed connection to her artistic roots. Despite the break, LIA’s process—built on the dynamic interaction between code and unexpected machine outputs—remained unchanged. Her time away allowed her to reconnect with personal creativity and consider the historical roots of generative art, drawing parallels between modern digital methods and ancient algorithmic traditions like weaving. LIA also reflected on the challenges of stepping away from the art world, recognizing the delicate balance between rejuvenation and remaining active in the artistic community. Ultimately, Sabbatical embodies the idea that pausing can lead to deeper insight and creative growth.
