Lawrence Weiner (1942 – 2021) was an American conceptual artist. Known for his large, poetic interventions he was one of the significant figures who shaped the formation of conceptual art in 1960s. Over the past five decades of his practice, he had created works exploring art as language. His text-based works transcend the medium where the possibilities of language to communicate is central beyond form
Lawrence Weiner attended to a public school in New York public. He had spent the late 1950s and early 1960s mostly travelling throughout North America. While he was hitchhiking to California, he made what he considered to be his first work in Mill Valley, near San Francisco in 1960.
Lawrence Weiner spent most of his time between his studio in New York City and his boat in Amsterdam. He had participated in various public and private projects and exhibitions in both the new and old world maintaining that: "Art is the empirical fact of the relationships of objects to objects in relation to human beings & not dependent upon historical precedent for either use or legitimacy."
