Jitish Kallat (b. 1974) is one of the most dynamic and exciting contemporary artists working today. Through a wide variety of media including painting, sculpture, photography, video and installation, Kallat converts what has been often described as a poetic chronicle of the cycle of life in a fast-transforming India, into arresting artworks. His works emerge out of varied autobiographical, art-historical and political references, often evoking multiple meanings and strong visceral responses.

Kallat’s work has been exhibited at museums and institutions including National Gallery of Modern Art (Mumbai), Tate Modern and Tate Britian (London), Martin Gropius Bau (Berlin), Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane), Kunst Museum (Bern), Serpentine Gallery (London), Mori Art Museum (Tokyo), Palais de Beaux-Arts (Brussels), Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Jean Tinguely Museum (Basel), Centre Pompidou (Paris) and the Gemeente Museum (The Hague) amongst many others. His recent solo shows include venues such as the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Mumbai, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Ian Potter Museum in Melbourne followed by a solo at the San Jose Museum of Art (Sept 2013-April 2014).
