About this artwork

Shigetoshi Furutani’s The Trifle of Immaturity (2016) animation is as the artist says, autobiographical. Consisting of “many different experiences, all of which are all part of my personality”, the work articulates the artist’s sentiment that “my preference for things has altered dramatically and very sporadically throughout my life. One thing taking prominence for a while, until another thing will immediately take its place. Warranting a situation in which my collective memories all have the potential of playing a minor or major part in my mental evolution. I exist as a container, logically controlling the intellectual and emotional traffic that influence my singular experiences.” The artist directly and indirectly references structures and motifs from various cultural assemblages in a work which challenges the boundaries of rationally and irrationally informed spaces and forms. Furutani explains: “...to a certain extent I am a robot which has been programmed by empirical education; whereby my personality is made up of all of these events. And in order to qualify something of my confusion I intentionally reappropriated Paolo De Matteis’ The Triumph of The Immaculate. I found that the narrative of the painting had similar concerns to my own preoccupations.”
